Our Market Stall Manager Obsa recently graduated from our Breadwinners Programme in Brighton, so we sat down with him to hear all about his experience and aspirations for the future!

Obsa surrounded by his amazing Breadwinners team in Brighton!

Hi Obsa, can you introduce yourself to our Breadwinners community?

Hello, my name is Obsa. I’m from Ethiopia and I’m 23 years old.

How did you find out about Breadwinners?

When I first came to Brighton, I was going to a youth charity and one of the people who works there referred me to Breadwinners.

My motivation was getting a chance to be included in the community, to improve my English skills and learn how to interact with people. Plus, I wanted to earn money.

What was your favourite part of being a Market Stall Manager? What was the most challenging?

The best part of being a market manager is the idea of meeting different people and making connections with other people. The challenging part is the language, sometimes it is difficult to understand native British people.

My advice is to be confident. Do not be afraid to meet new people. Always come on time and show commitment to be able to find a new job in the future.

What did you learn on the programme?

My confidence is improved and my ability to communicate and negotiate is now much better.

Do you like bread?

Of course I love bread. Ciabatta is my favourite.

Did you enjoy having a mentor?

Yes, she was very good. She helped me to apply to jobs and showed me how to use my email. I wanted to thank her very much.

What are your plans after Breadwinners?

I already started a new job in security. I will continue to work to improve my language as well as earning money.

Do you have a dream job?

My dream is to have my own shop. I would like to be a manager of my own corner shop where I sell a lot of different goods.

Do you have any tips or advice for young people who are also looking to gain work experience?

My advice is to be confident. Do not be afraid to meet new people. Always come on time and show commitment to be able to find a new job in the future.
