Why This Exhibition Matters

At Breadwinners, we work every day to support young refugees into work and training — but last year, we asked: What more can we do?

Through our Participatory Action Research (PAR), where young people and mentors led the way in shaping our direction, we heard a clear message:
🔹 89% of young people
🔹 85% of mentors
said YES — Breadwinners should do more to explore and respond to the challenges facing young refugees.

So, we listened. And now, we’re proud to launch our first-ever Creative Youth Voices Project, built from the ground up by young refugees new to the UK. This project is more than art — it’s storytelling, skill-building, and community-making rolled into one.

Meet the Creators Behind the Work

Shanzay, Faisal, Shadia, Kwizera, Josie, Idris, Billie, Tia, Bemnet, Daniel, Hanna, Leen, Moaz, Chelsea, Bsrat and Salim, mix of former Breadwinners programme participant with lived experience of the asylum system, housing challenges, and job searching in the UK, and creatives experts, guided by our brilliant Programme Manager Josie, produced this incredible positive and inspiring audio-visual exhibition!

Through 8 days of hands-on work experience, these young people are developing portraits, recording audio stories, making creative decisions, and learning transferable skills that can lead to jobs in the creative industries.

Together, they’ve created an exhibition that celebrates joy, resilience, and power — countering the negative headlines and showing the full humanity of young refugees in the UK.

What to Expect at the Exhibition

👀 Striking portraits
🎧 Powerful two-minute audio stories
🗣️ Personal reflections, creative expression, and real joy

You’ll walk away with a deeper understanding of the refugee experience — not through stats or speeches, but through the voices and visions of the young people themselves.

It’s fun, it’s meaningful, and it’s a celebration. Hope you can make it!
