Building Confidence and Community: Breadwinners x The Sussex Peasant

At Breadwinners, we believe that meaningful opportunities and strong community connections can transform lives. That’s why we’re so excited to share a new collaboration between our Risers Programme winners.org.uk/risersand The Sussex Peasant, a partnership that is already making a positive impact for young people from refugee and asylum-seeking backgrounds.

Over the past few weeks, two of our amazing Risers have been volunteering at The Sussex Peasant’s bread stalls, gaining first-hand experience in customer service, teamwork, and local food retail. Supported by their Breadwinners mentors and welcomed by The Sussex Peasant team, they’ve had the chance to step into a real working environment, learn new skills, and build confidence along the way.

Risers and Mentors at The Sussex Peasant Market Stall in Brighton

For many young people who have recently arrived in the UK, accessing that first work experience opportunity can be a major milestone. It’s not just about learning practical skills, it’s about gaining confidence, meeting new people, and beginning to feel a sense of belonging within the local community.

Through opportunities like this, our Risers are able to strengthen communication skills, develop workplace experience, and build the foundations they need for future employment. With the encouragement of mentors and supportive partners, each experience becomes a step towards greater independence and opportunity.

This collaboration is a wonderful example of what happens when local organisations come together with a shared purpose. Businesses like The Sussex Peasant play an essential role by opening their doors and creating welcoming spaces where young people can grow. Combined with the guidance of mentors and the dedication of our Risers, these partnerships create lasting impact.

We are incredibly grateful to The Sussex Peasant for their warmth, generosity, and commitment to supporting young people in our community. Their support is helping to create opportunities that go far beyond the market stall, opportunities that build confidence, empower futures, and strengthen community connections.

Together, we’re proving that community collaboration can open doors and create meaningful change.

Thank you to everyone involved in making this partnership possible. We can’t wait to see where it leads next.
