How to conduct Participatory Action Research

We have just released our 2022 Impact Report featuring our first ever Participatory Action Research led by our Risers Graduate Abdoul and we wanted to share what we learned so other charities can replicate our methodology.

To do so, we have summarised our approach to Participatory Action Research in 10 steps, which you can find explained in the tutorial video we filmed with Abdoul above!

10 steps to conducting Participatory Action Research:

  1. Form your research team.

  2. Explain the project and your expectations.

  3. Plan the project timeline.

  4. Design the survey questions.

  5. Create a final survey.

  6. Compile a list of contact information and collect your data.

  7. Summarise and report your findings.

  8. Discuss actions to take.

  9. Share with your community.

  10. Improve your programmes!

If you have any feedback or questions about the PAR methodology and our impact measurements, please reach out to our Research Lead Abdoul at abdoul@breadwinners.org.uk!

We also sat down with Abdoul to hear about his experience leading a Participatory Action Research for the first time in the interview below, in which he shared tips and advice for fellow researchers who are looking to try out this methodology for the first time.
